NYPPA vice president Todd Maisel has recently been fielding questions about a rumor that the Press Identification card issued by the NYPD is being eliminated, so credentials chair Jerry Engle checked with Lt. Whyte at DCPI and has confirmed that the card is not discontinued. However, the DCPI staff is focused totally on completing renewals of the Working Press card first. After they have finished this they’ll be in a position to deal with those who have the Press Identification card.
The renewal appointments the association arranged in October and November were for Working Press cards only. Very few Press Identification cards have yet been renewed, and that was done because those who renewed lucked into a good day.
Members will be advised via this website as soon as the association finds out anything about when the Press Identification cards can be renewed. A reminder: membership in the NYPPA does not—and cannot—entitle anyone to a press card, although we will do what we can to help.
