2015 Contest Judges

2015 NYPPA STILL & MULTIMEDIA  JUDGES

Porter Binks Elise Amendola Chris Chambers

Porter Binks Elise Amendola Chris Chambers

Porter Binks is a freelance photo editor, photographer and photo event manager in New York City.  He is currently the photo consultant to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Other clients include The United States Golf Association, New York Road Runners and The Big East Conference. Binks was with Sports Illustrated for 10 years as the College Basketball picture editor, where he occasionally freelance edits.

He was the basketball photo manager at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and at Ski Jumping/Cross Country for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. Before joining Sports Illustrated, Binks spent 16 years as a sports picture editor and photographer at USA TODAY, also covering news and sports assignments in Washington, D.C.

Binks was a judge for the Newspaper Division of the 2010 Pictures of the Year International (POYi) sponsored by the University of Missouri. He’s a member of NPPA, NYPPA and WHNPA. He began his career as a reporter at The Chattanooga Times.

Elise Amendola, one of our judges in this year’s photo contest, has been a photographer for the AP in Boston for the past 31 years.

When not covering the day-to-day, Elise specializes in sports and politics. She has photographed numerous Olympics, World Cups, Super Bowls, World Series, tennis and golf majors, as well as presidential campaigns spanning from Hillary Clinton’s bid in 2008 all the way back to Michael Dukakis in 1988 and everything in between.

Chris Chambers After studying Management at Springfield College in Massachusetts, Chris Chambers went against conventional wisdom and took a job as a photo assistant at NBA Photos. He spent 2 years working in the photo archive doing everything from filing dupes to learning how to edit. After getting tired of life in the office he spent a year assisting NBA photographer Jesse Garrabrant.

Deciding he was more cut out for editing than shooting, Chris took a job with Getty Images as a night picture desk editor. Chris’s time at Getty was highlighted by his 7 year run as Senior Field Photo Editor traveling the globe covering 4 Olympics, the FINA World Swimming Championships, Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals, Indianapolis 500 and the Kentucky Derby.

He currently is the College Football and Motorsports picture editor for Sports Illustrated magazine and also spends the second week of April as a contract photo editor for Augusta National during the Masters Golf tournament.

During his 16 years working in photography Chris has been based out of New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. He currently lives in Hoboken, NJ with his fiancée Brittany and dog Murphy.
